Sagemcom milestones on 4K UHD

With its challenging spirit of always being amongst the first to keep up with technological breakthroughs, SAGEMCOM leant on the 4K UHD technology during spring 2013.

The company has designed a range of customizable Ultra-High Definition Set-Top Boxes that supply a breathtakingly sharp 4K UHD image. The transmission of these incredible images implies new ways of consuming contents that require more and more bandwidth (in order to broadcast more pictures, details and colours). For that, SAGEMCOM products support the innovative HEVC (High Efficiency Video Coding) video codec, that improves video compression efficiency compared to MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 coding algorithms. HEVC’s goal is to gain over 50% bandwidth, allowing the operators to improve the pictures quality of their video offers with no or limited increase of required bandwidth for transmitting them.

SAGEMCOM initiative on 4K UHD started in 2013, even before HEVC standard was finalised, with preliminary HEVC decoders, to anticipate its future developments, and then presented its first HEVC 4K UHD STB in January 2014 at CES, before achieving first real-time 4K UHD encoding/decoding tests in Avril 2014, and then 60 frames per second decoding, for an optimal viewing experience, in May 2014.

These successive development steps allowed to secure the soft launch by the company of its first UHD set-top boxes, during the 2014 FIFA World Cup, with 3 matches broadcasted live in Ultra High Definition from Rio de Janeiro Maracana Stadium, and received/decoded in real-time in several Brazilian cities thanks to Sagemcom UHD set-top boxes.

The latest developments of SAGEMCOM on 4K UHD Set-top boxes – including ability to support various TV ecosystems, to offer powerful wireless connection with integrated Wi-Fi ac, to enable ultra-fast channel change, to support latest audio and video codecs, to grant access to various OTT services, to embed a fibre connection, … – were demonstrated at IBC 2015.

The company considers 4K UHD as one of its priorities and is committed to offer the best of its technology to its customers.
