EnBW and Dr. Neuhaus Telekommunikation are working together to introduce intelligent measurement systems




Working together to take advantage of opportunities in the energy revolution / Developing commercial solutions for intelligent measurement systems in EnBW's nationwide rollout project

Stuttgart/Hamburg. EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG, one of Europe's leading energy supply companies, and Dr. Neuhaus Telekommunikation GmbH part of the SAGEMCOM Energy group, an innovator in industrial communication and pioneer in the field of M2M data communication, are planning a joint effort beginning in 2014 to test 10,000 measurement systems for recording, controlling and billing energy consumption in Baden-Württemberg. The goal is to develop smart meter solutions and provide them to the energy market. The first step is to gather basic findings on the performance capacity, potential applications and interoperability of the technology used in laboratory testing and multiple field tests. Gateway administration will be established at the same time. A pilot phase will be launched in mid-2015 to test the interchangeability and suitability for mass implementation of the systems and processes. The intelligent measurement systems are scheduled for nationwide implementation on the market in 2016.

2011 became the installation of intelligent measuring systems with change of the German Energy Management Act (Energiewirtschaftsgesetz –EnWG) obligating for numerous consumers as soon as systems became available which meet the data protection and security requirements of the German Federal Office for Information Security (Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik – BSI). The installation requirement applies to consumers with an annual consumption of over 6,000 kilowatt hours, to name one example. "The amendment to the EnWG means that the legislators have delegated a very demanding task to us as a network operator," explains Dr. Christoph Müller, management board member of EnBW Regional AG. "We will be equipping more than 800,000 of our network customers with intelligent measurement systems as soon as they become available on the market. With Dr.Neuhaus, we have found a competent and experienced partner with the expertise needed to meet these requirements in practice together with us. Modern measurement systems not only give our customers a transparent overview of their energy consumption, they also lay the foundation for variable tariffs and new "smart" applications. This makes them an important part of the energy revolution.
