WHY THE SECURE SUPPLY CHAIN?

Data protection and data security are of utmost importance for the rollout of Smart Meter Gateways (SMGW). SMGW manufacturers and metering point operators are required by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) to take strict security precautions throughout the entire SMGW life cycle.

For this reason, Sagemcom Dr. Neuhaus has developed a compact guideline for the secure supply chain of Siconia® SMARTY IQ SMGW, which ensures the integrity and freedom from manipulation of the devices in a practicable manner, from delivery from a protected production environment in Rostock to storage at the metering point operator and assembly at the end consumer.

SiLKe Process

THE SLIKE PROCESS

Production

1) Production and storage at Sagemcom Dr. Neuhaus:

  • Production of the Siconia® SMARTY IQ SMGW in the manufacturer's own production in Rostock
  • Safe storage in a BSI-certified warehouse
Transport

2) Transport to the metering point operator:

  • Case 1: Transport in a "small" safe container
  • Case 2: Transport in a "large" safe container
  • Case 3: Transport without safe container
    • Various requirements must be met (e.g. recipient and carrier named by name, at least two drivers, seal with ID etc.).
MSBAlternative transition to the “MSB supply chain” starting from goods receipt of the initial delivery. Execution of the components storage, transport, and installation (and deinstallation from TR2.0 onward) is carried out in accordance with the MSB’s security concept.
Storage

3) Storage at the metering point operator:

  • Case 1: Storage in a safe container
  • Case 2: Storage in a BSI-certified warehouse without a safe container
Transport

4) Transport to the installation site:

  • Case 1: Transport in a safe container
  • Case 2: Transport without a safe container
    • 1 fitter → max. 6 SMGW ✓
    • 2 fitters → max. 12 SMGW ✓
Assembly

5) Assembly at the final consumer's premises:

  • Checking the security features of the Siconia® SMARTY IQ:
    • integrity of the device and the seal
    • Device number of the SMGW etc.
  • Simple "Plug & Play" installation process

THE SAFE CONTAINER

  • Manipulation-protected, PIN-protected transport box
  • Safe container available in small and large variants (pallet housing)
  • Disposable PIN procedure
    • for each opening and closing operation of the safe container
    • Code assignment using-one-time PIN lists from Sagemcom Dr. Neuhaus
  • Investment security through export possibility to other systems (GWA system, service provider etc..)
  • Safe container can be obtained from Sagemcom Dr. Neuhaus:

WHY THE MSB SUPPLY CHAIN?

The MSB supply chain is a simplified version of SiLKe, which can be operated directly by the Metering Point Operator (MSB) starting from the goods receipt of the initial delivery (legal handover situation).

In this case, the MSB’s responsibility begins immediately upon initial delivery. The prerequisite is that the respective MSB has a security concept in accordance with the BSI requirement catalog.

Using the MSB supply chain enables flexible and economically viable logistics for Smart Meter Gateways (SMGWs)—from production, through storage, to installation at the end customer’s site.
